How to Teach your Dog to Sit!

activities dog dog treats summer zen bites

Over the summer people have been getting new pets and need to teach their dogs how to behave and obey. Here at Zen Frenz, we are all about the wellness of your pet. Wellness includes the behavior of your dog. Below is a way to teach your dog how to sit!

  1. With your dog in a standing position, hold a tasty treat near their nose.
  2. Keeping the treat near your dogs nose, move your hand in an arc over his head. As the dog raises his head to follow the treat, his bottom will go on the floor. The instant he sits, praise him and give him the treat.
    • (Praising your dog is really important! You need to show that their progress doesn’t go unnoticed, and you are excited for them to keep learning)
  3. Practice this a number of times in short but regular sessions.
  4. As the dog always gets a treat for sitting you'll soon find he sits for longer. You can now add the cue word “sit” as he goes to sit. Be careful not to say it before your dog moves into position or they may associate it with the wrong movement.
    • (Remember! This takes time. Don’t get frustrated with your dog because that wont make any progress happen. Be paitent and keep trying!)
  5. Practice this a number of times in short but regular sessions.
  6. Give an 'okay' cue to let your dog know when their training has ended.
    • (Make sure to do this because your dog needs to know that training and obeying is for a time being! They can have fun and be free after!)
