Four Homemade Dog Food Recipes

All of these recipes have simple ingredients and easy-to-follow directions. For the most part, all recipes use brown rice and a lean protein as a base, with some variations in the mix-ins. Feel free to use these recipes as inspiration and a jumping-off point for your pet’s food. Feel free to make any substitutions or adjustments as needed, just make sure to confirm that all of the ingredients you are using are dog friendly! 

Recipe #1:  

Original recipe yields 5 servings


  • 6 cups water 

  • 1 pound ground turkey 

  • 2 cups brown rice 

  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary 

  • ½ (16 ounce) package frozen broccoli, carrots and cauliflower combination


Place the water, ground turkey, rice, and rosemary into a large Dutch oven. Stir until the ground turkey is broken up and evenly distributed throughout the mixture; bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the frozen vegetables, and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Remove from heat and cool. Refrigerate until using.

Recipe #2:

  • 6 cups cooked organic brown rice (3 cups uncooked rice)

  • 2 pounds ground lean beef, cooked through, fat drained

  • 4 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and diced small

  • 3 medium-sized carrots, shredded or thinly sliced

  • ¼ cup minced curly parsley 

  • 3 tablespoons of olive or safflower oil 


Combine all of the ingredients in a large, resealable container, and stir to combine. Store tightly sealed in the refrigerator. Should be eaten within a week of preparing.

Recipe #3:


  • 1 ½ cups brown rice

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 3 pounds ground turkey

  • 3 cups baby spinach, chopped

  • 2 carrots, shredded

  • 1 zucchini, shredded

  • ½ cup peas, canned or frozen 


In a large saucepan of 3 cups water, cook rice according to package instructions; set aside. Heat olive oil in a large stockpot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add ground turkey and cook until browned, about 3-5 minutes, making sure to crumble the turkey as it cooks. Stir in spinach, carrots, zucchini, peas, and brown rice until the spinach has wilted and the mixture is heated through, about 3-5 minutes. Let cool completely. Store tightly sealed in the refrigerator. Should be eaten within a week of preparing.

Recipe #4:


  • 2 teaspoons olive oil

  • 3 pounds ground turkey

  • 3 medium sweet potatoes 

  • 3 carrots, peeled

  • 2 zucchini squash 

  • 1 cup of broccoli florets 

  • 3 cups of chicken stock or water (no salt added)

  • 20 ounces of macaroni noodles 


In a large Dutch oven heat oil on medium heat. Add ground turkey, begin to break it down, and cook for 8-10 minutes or until mostly cooked through. With a food processor finely chop sweet potatoes, carrots, zucchini, broccoli. Add in vegetables and stock to turkey. Add in the chopped vegetables and cook on a strong simmer for 7-8 minutes or until veggies are tender and cooked through. Mix in your cooked pasta noodles to the turkey vegetable mixture.
