Pet Cancer Awareness Month

It’s November! This means it’s officially Pet Cancer Awareness Month which gives us the perfect opportunity to not only spread awareness but help educate you on things you can do to help prevent and also to treat cancer in your pets. Just as the causes for cancer range from environmental to genetic, the intensity of cancer also ranges from mild to severe. And, while dogs can develop cancer at any point in their life, older dogs are more likely to develop cancer. Some breeds, such as Golden Retrievers, are also more genetically predisposed to developing cancer. One out of Four dogs will develop cancer, and contributes to making cancer the leading cause of death among dogs. Pet parents need to be informed on preventative treatment, but as always speak to your veterinarian for more detailed information on preventative measures you should take with your dog or how you should help treat your dog if they unfortunately have developed cancer already.

Diet is Key

What is in your dogs’ kibble can affect the health of your dog. Some dog foods have toxins in them and grains can also convert into sugar which can fuel cancer cells. Even seemingly healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables still need to be mindfully sourced and prepared to prevent traces of herbicides or pesticides. There are many foods full of nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants to boost your pet’s immune system. A boosted immune system can help prevent and treat cancer in your pets . You should consult your veterinarian to find a diet that can benefit your pet.

Different Types of Cancer

There are many different types of cancers and it can be hard to pinpoint exactly what symptoms to look out for different types of pet cancers since cancer symptoms can also go alongside other symptoms. If you find any lumps, make sure you get them checked by your veterinarian. Remember, a cancer diagnosis does not mean your dog will die. You can help prevent certain types of cancer such as skin cancer by keeping your dog out of the blazing sun unless you are applying sunscreen.

Warning Signs

There are many warning signs for pet cancer, and although many of these symptoms can indicate problems aside from cancer. But if you see any of the following symptoms, consult your pet’s veterinarian:

  • Sores that don’t heal
  • Unusual swelling or lumps
  • Unusual odor, especially from the breath
  • Lameness or stiffness
  • Exercise aversion
  • Weight loss
  • Appetite loss
  • Difficulty eating or swallowing
  • Bleeding or discharge from the mouth or other orifices
  • Difficulty breathing, urinating, or defecating

No matter if you do or do not notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to schedule regular vet visits every 6 months. Your vet may notice something you did not. Your vet may ever recommend CBD oil or dogs to help with the pain your dog may experience during treatment or after.

Hopefully you will share this information with other pet parents which can help save a pet’s life. This is the whole point for Pet Cancer Awareness Month to exist!
