Hypoallergenic Dogs to Keep the Tissues Away

Do you have allergies but love dogs and want to be a dog parent more than anything? You just have to get a dog that is hypoallergenic which means they do not shed as much hair or dander which is what people are typically allergic to. These dogs tend to be smaller or medium sized which makes sense because even if a dog has minimal shedding, a smaller dog also has less hair to shed.

There are a variety of dogs to pick from so read on to find 16 dogs that can be your allergy friendly companion.

Affenpincher

While these dogs still shed now and then, their coat is wiry which results in them only needing to remove old, dead fur occasionally.

Basenji

Once you hear about this dog you may second guess if this dog is a dog or secretly a cat. While these dogs’ short coat does not result in much shedding, this breed also self cleans. The self cleaning and short hair is the perfect equation for less dander which is good for allergies.

Bedlington Terrier

These lamb esque dogs have tightly coiled, wooled coats that need daily brushing to prevent matting. While this may be a downside since you may need to pull some tissues for yourself during this time, at least their coat barely sheds at other times.

Bichon Frise

These puffballs have soft, fluffy coats that help keep dander at bay rather than swimming around your living space. During grooming day stay outside the groomers since this is when all their dander will be released.

Hairless Chinese Crested

If you don’t mind the look of a hairless dog or think they are super cute then these hairless beauties are perfect for your allergies. This breed will shed little hair or even none depending on their grooming frequency.

Havanese

This breed has a fluffy coat that sports a soft wave which helps their hair from falling out all over the couch that you like to relax on.

Komondor

To be completely honest, Komondors have a striking similarity to a mop. And when you think of a mop, stuff typically does not fall out of it which makes sense since its job to collect. However, a cord in a mop may fall out completely which may happen to Komondor now and then as well.

Poodle

This breed is great for light allergy sufferers. They have a curly coat with minimal light shedding which can be minimized and maintained with regular grooming and brushing.

Giant Schnauzer

This is also a great dog for mild allergy sufferers since the dander they shed can be controlled through regular grooming since while they don’t shed in large clumps like some dogs, they do shed smaller amounts of fur.

Shih Tzu

If you really want a Shih Tzu, you will have to put in the work if you don’t want to be sneezing 24/7. This breed has hair very similar to our own so to keep from having an allergic reaction, regular grooming, brushing, and keeping the hair at low-shed level is very important and doable.
